The first sale!

Yesterday, while browsing some of the microstock websites I have uploaded my portfolio to, I saw something that was out of place on Stockxpert. Could it be? Yes! I made a full $ 0,60! I had sold 2 of my “Bell Pepper” photos. Nothing to get real excited over yet, but a first sale, is a first sale.

Slowly (very slowly, due to a small vacation and work) my portfiolio has been growing. It counts a “whopping” 25 photos at the moment. Most of wich have been accepted on Dreamstime, Fotolia and Stockxpert. Soon I will start uploading on iStockphoto and Shutterstock as well. I just wanted to test the waters first on acceptance rates etc. I will make a post on acceptance rates a bit later on.

What (not) to submit

Been there, done that, took the photo and got a t-shirt to prove it. You have to realize when you get into the microstock market that almost every possible photo has (probably) already been shot once. Do not let this discourage you though, you can not really avoid it anyway. Just always keep in mind that you should try to make your photo stand out above the rest, so it appeals to your potential buyer.

As a microstock photographer you should also take note of what the agencies your uploading to want to have in their portfolio. Nobody wants to see your shadow, pet or feet. Most microstock agencies even provide lists of things that they do and do not need. Below I have included the “want” and “want not” lists of Fotolia and iStockphoto.

Want:
Health and medical field, Business related photos, People in activities, Controversial issues, Religious faith, Technology photos, Objects, Close up shots, Under water photos.

Want not: Dogs, Cats, Ducks, Insects, Flowers, Sunsets, Nature, Fine arts.

The first 10

Ok, so after a little experimenting with the lighting setup, my tabletop and getting the background 100% white (not easy), I finally managed to shoot my first 10 still life microstock photos. Have a look at them below. It is really basic so far and I realize I still have a long way to go to get up there with the pro’s, but it is a start!
